Liverpool, July 11 Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard paid his respects to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva with a personal tribute at Anfield on Friday morning.

The Liverpool legend added flowers to the memorial site outside the Main Stand, which features hundreds of condolences to Diogo and Andre, who died in a road traffic accident last Thursday.

He was joined by members of the Steven Gerrard Academy in laying a tribute to the two brothers.

As Liverpool players return to pre-season training, a number of first team players including Milos Kerkez, Armin Pecsi and Dominik Szoboszlai laid flowers at the site of condolences for the brothers on Thursday.

Former Reds midfielder Adam Lallana, meanwhile, paid his respects outside the Main Stand, where there are many hundreds of tributes from fans, friends, members of the public and the club.

A mural near Anfield on Sybil Road – one of several supporter-led initiatives – has also been created by Murwalls. The powerful ‘Forever 20’ artwork is being adorned by personal messages.

Earlier on Tuesday, Liverpool began their pre-season training as players returned to the AXA Training Centre, five days after the tragic passing away.

A few of the players were expected to report back to the club on Friday but the tragic news saw them delay their plans. The Liverpool squad led by Virgil Van Dijk and head coach Arne Slot were present at Jota’s funeral to pay their respects on Saturday.

Jota, 28, was a key figure for both Portugal and Liverpool. Since joining the club in 2020 from PL side Wolves, he helped them win major trophies including the Premier League, FA Cup and two EFL Cups.

For Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps and netted 14 goals. He was part of the squad that lifted the UEFA Nations League title in 2019 and again in 2025, when Portugal defeated Spain in the final. The forward had celebrated that victory with his teammates just weeks ago.
