According to sources, the film has reportedly crossed Rs 300 crore at the global box office, with Rs 156 crore in India alone, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023 and surpassing Thalapathy Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna starrer action drama Varisu.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 grossed over Rs 500 crore globally, making it the second highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, trailing only Shankar’s 2.0.

The film follows the prince Arunmozhi Varman (later emperor Rajaraja I) and his family as they contend with Chola dynasty challenges. It was initially planned to be a single film, but it was divided into two sections that were made concurrently.
