It is believed that the fort was built by Sultan Muzaffar Khan, the founder of the city of Muzaffarabad. The construction work of this fort was started in 1559. But later it was captured by the Mughals.

The architecture of the fort is worth seeing. The fort is surrounded by the Neelam river in three directions. A roof has been built near the steps in the north area. These steps lead to the river bank. The fort was made very safe. So as to save the fort from water.

The fort was rebuilt in 1846 by Maharaja Gulab Singh of the Dogra dynasty. The fort was expanded for political and military campaigns. The entire work of the fort was completed during the reign of Maharaja Ranbir Singh.
