Drought had plagued Maharashtra for the last 4 decades. The people of the state had to face various problems like crop failure, drought, lack of drinking water. Actor Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao recognized this problem and decided to work in this field.

For this, Aamir Khan went to the villages of the state and brought the villagers together and performed a miracle to bring about change. Through the Pani Foundation, the team of Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao undertook the task of creating a water revolution in the state. A large number of people came together and formed a movement.

The Pani Foundation was established with the aim of making Maharashtra drought free and prosperous by giving more space to solutions and technology through the unity of the people. From 2016 to 2019, a competition called Satyamev Jayate Water Cup was held. The competition was organized to improve soil and water conservation.

Due to this work done through Pani Foundation, with the help of the villagers participating in the Satyamev Jayate competition in the last 4 years, 550 billion liters of water storage capacity has been created in the state. For the training conducted by Pani Foundation, 5 participants were sent from each of the participating villages.

In a joint statement the couple said,'We began a planned separation some time ago, and now feel comfortable to formalise this arrangement, of living separately yet sharing our lives the way an extended family does. We remain devoted parents to our son Azad, who we will nurture and raise together. We will also continue to work as collaborators on films, Paani Foundation, and other projects that we feel passionate about. A big thank you to our families and friends for their constant support and understanding about this evolution in our relationship, and without whom we would not have been so secure in taking this leap. We request our well wishers for good wishes and blessings, and hope that - like us - you will see this divorce not as an end, but as the start of a new journey.'
