Eknath Shinde wins Sena fight a glimpse into history of splits within parties

The election commission gave the result of the fight between Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde over Shiv Sena and the party's election symbol Dhanushyaban. The commission agreed with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and conferred the symbol of Shiv Sena and Dhanushyaban on his party.

The Election Commission had earlier given the election symbol of Balasaheb's Shiv Sena and two swords-one shield to the Eknath Shinde group. It has now been immediately withdrawn and Eknath Shinde's party has been given the name Shiv Sena and the bow and arrow symbol led by Uddhav Thackeray.

This is not the first case of a major party split. Earlier this was the case with the Indian National Congress Party. In 1969, the party split into two factions. Two groups were named as Congress (O) and Congress (I). Congress in 1978.

In 1980, AIADMK was divided into two factions in Tamil Nadu. One party was led by MG Ramachandran's wife VN Janaki. The second group was led by Jayalalithaa. Later, the Janata Dal Party was also divided in the same way. In this, JD(U) and JD(S).

In 2012, a situation arose in Uttarakhand where Kranti Dal had two factions. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party was divided at the election stage in 2017. Later, Shivpal Yadav started a party called Samajwadi Secular Morcha.

The commission has clarified that the party name and the bow and arrow symbol are being given to the applicant Eknath Shinde as per the authority conferred under Article 324 of the Constitution and as per section 15 and 18 of the Election Symbol Allotment Act, 1968.
