Gujarat: Two brain dead friends gave life to 12 people by organ donation

As many as 13 organs and tissues were donated to give new lease of life to many patients in cadaver donation after two friends died in road accident and their family decided to donate their vital organs.

Four kidney, two liver, a heart, two lungs and four corneas were donated. According to sources, Meet Pandya (18), a resident of Rustampura and his friend Krish Gandhi (19), a resident of Begumpura in Surat, who were going on a bike on August 24 when they were hit by a speeding vehicle from behind and they fell on the ground and they were seriously injured.

A passersby called in emergency ambulance and they were taken to hospital for treatment. Both suffered brain-hammragge.

Treating doctors declared both of them brain-dead and informed their families. 'As soon as we were informed about the two brain-dead patients, we rushed to the spot and met their family members and explained them about the importance of cadavar donation.

They agreed for cadaver donation of their sons. After receiving the formal consent for cadaver donation from both the families, we alerted State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) convener Dr Pranjal Modi about it,'' said Nilesh Mandlewala, Donate Life founder president.

SOTTO allocated kidneys of Meet and Krish to Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) in Ahmedabad and livers were allocated to Shelby hospital in Ahmedabad and Sterling hospital. Meet's heart was allocated to CIMS hospital in Ahmedabad.

Krish's lungs were transplanted into 54-year-old Jawan from Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad. The CRPF Jawan had been living on oxygen support for the last one and half year.

Krish's liver was transplanted into a 55-year-old man from Rajkot at Shelby hospital in Ahmedabad where's Meet's liver was transplanted into 47-year-old teacher from Bayad town in Sterling hospital in Ahmedabad. Corneas of Meet and Krisha were donated to Surat based Lok Drashti Eye Bank. Meet's heart was transplanted into a 21-year-old girl from Vadodara.
