Pregnant women in Ranchi sterilized without consent after child birth

A pregnant woman, who was admitted to the maternity ward of Ranchi’s Sadar Hospital in Jharkhand for delivery, alleged that she was sterilized during the surgery without her consent according to a India Today report.

The incident happened soon after she delivered the child.

According to sources, Poonam Devi, a resident of Kantatoli locality in Ranchi, was admitted to Sadar Hospital for delivery where doctors said she will need to undergo a caesarean operation. Finding no alternative, Poonam agreed to undergo the surgery.

After the operation, she was informed that her hysterectomy or sterilization was also performed after surgery.

However, Poonam alleged that she did not know about the sterilization and was informed about this only after the operation.

Poonam alleged that the surgery was conducted without the couple’s consent.

Meanwhile, Dr Savyasachi Mandal, the Deputy Superintendent of the hospital, denied the charges and said Poonam had approved for sterilization and only then the surgery was performed.
