158 students taking part in 'peace march' detained

The Delhi Police detained as many as 158 students taking part in the Jantar Mantar to Ramlila Maidan "peace march", organised by the Young India Coordination Committee, here on Tuesday.

New Delhi, March 3 The Delhi Police detained as many as 158 students taking part in the Jantar Mantar to Ramlila Maidan "peace march", organised by the Young India Coordination Committee, here on Tuesday.

According to the police, the students were detained because the permission to march over Delhi riots was denied.

Speaking to , former JNUSU president N. Sai Balaji, one of the organisers, said the permission was declined "last minute". "We had submitted application for permission on February 27. We were informed on Monday about the permission being rejected," Balaji said.

However, student at Jantar Mantar raised anti-government slogans and demanded Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation over the recent communal riots in northeast Delhi. They carried posters and banners against the CAA, sedition law and violence in northeast Delhi.

The placards read: "Peace, Not Riot", "Scrap Sedition Law" and "Stop police brutality on anti-CAA protestors".

The gathering was addressed by student leaders, like Aishe Ghosh, Umar Khalid, and Chandrashekhar 'Ravan'.
