Jaipur, Feb 29 Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said here on Saturday party-switching didn't sound good for the parliamentary democracy and the best way to prevent that was to stop them altogether.

"If an elected public representative changes the party, his membership should be terminated," he said during a workshop, organised to discuss the Speaker's role under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution.

In 1985, during Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's regime the anti-defection law was brought through the 52nd Amendment and the Tenth Schedule was added to the Constitution. It did check on the incidents of party-change for a long time.

Stressing making funding of political parties transparent to eliminate corruption, Gehlot said the money political parties received "comes in the form of black money".

To make the country corruption-free, a transparent method should be devised for donations to political parties, the Congress leader said.

Underlining the importance of retaining the basic spirit of the Constitution, he said if the constitutional spirit remained alive everything else would get corrected itself.

Interestingly, Gehlot was said to be instrumental in induction into the Congress of six BSP legislators in September 2019.
