New Delhi, March 26 Amid people walking to their native places after the unprecedented nationwide lockdown to check the spread of coronavirus, the Congress on Thursday demanded that the Centre help the informal sector workers who were not registered anywhere.

Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill on Thursday tweeted and said, "90 per cent of the total workforce was "informal".

He said that 82 per cent workers in the informal sector and 71.1 per cent regular wagers have no written job contract as per the PLFS Survey.

He said that 69 per cent informal and 49.6 per cent regular wagers were not getting the social benefits.

Asking the Centre for a plan to help the people working in the unorganised sector, Shergill said, "How will the government ensure protection to labour force? What's the plan?"

The Congress has demanded that the minimum guarantee scheme be implemented.

Party Chief Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted on Wednesday: "Dear PM, Need of the hour is to implement forthwith "Minimum Income Guarantee Scheme"(Nyay) mooted by Rahulji & Congress."

"Pl. transfer Rs 7,500 to every Jan Dhan A/C, PM Kisan A/C & every Pension A/C to tide over nutrition needs of 21 days & give free PDS ration." said Surjewala.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the complete lockdown for 21 days and allocated Rs 15,000 crore to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure to fight coronavirus in India.

The Congress, even though has supported the lockdown, is raising questions about the relief packages for the unorganised sector workers.
