Guwahati (Assam) [India], April 1 : Congress leader Pawan Khera, reacting to the Bharatiya Janata Party's poll promise to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, alleged that the ruling party was attempting to divert public attention from key governance issues.
Speaking to ANI, Congress leader accused the BJP of engaging in polarisation tactics ahead of elections.
"They will try to raise such issues so that the voters' attention gets diverted from the real lies of the BJP government, and they get misled. Let them try to polarise. The people of Assam will never get polarised," he said.
Khera also claimed that such promises are aimed at deflecting scrutiny from the government's performance.
"They are just trying to raise wrong issues so that there is no talk about their own shortcomings, their own corruption, and their own misdeeds," he added.
On Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its manifesto for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, promising a Uniform Civil Code and increasing the monthly direct bank transfer under the Orunodoi scheme to Rs 3,000 for women.
Listing 31 promises, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the BJP aims to make Assam the "brightest state".
Following the footsteps of Uttarakhand and Gujarat, and tapping into the BJP's core agenda, the Chief Minister promised a Uniform Civil Code and action against the alleged "love jihad". The UCC, he said, will exclude the areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and will not be implemented on tribal communities.
CM Sarma said, "We want to make Assam the brightest state. We don't want to be a dependent state; we want to take part in nation building of the country. In the Sankalp Patra, we have made 31 promises. We will implement UCC in Assam, excluding Sixth Schedule, ST areas. We will take strong steps against Love Jihad. We will try to make flood-free Assam, and in the first two years, we will spend Rs 18,000 crore."
He also assured Rs 25,000, with an aim to make 40 lakh women under the Lakhpati Didi scheme.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gogamukh, while addressing rally, vowed to implement the Uniform Civil Code in Assam, while reiterating the state government's commitment to protecting tribal traditions, Sixth Schedule areas and preserving Assam's identity.
Addressing a public rally in Gogamukh, the Prime Minister said that several key decisions have been taken to ensure dignity, safety and equal rights, particularly for women.
"To ensure that no deceit is done to our daughters, many major announcements have also been made to ensure the dignity, respect, and safety of our daughters' lives. Implementing the Uniform Civil Code in Assam and protecting the traditions of our tribal society, Sixth Schedule areas, or saving Assam's identity are very big announcements. The BJP does what it says," he said.
