The ruling Congress has won six of seven municipal corporations in Punjab on Wednesday. The counting of votes started at 9 am for elections to 2,302 wards of eight municipal corporations and 109 municipal councils in the state.

The Congress has won the municipal corporations of Bathinda, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Pathankot, officials said. It is leading in Batala, Moga and Abohar. It's biggest win yet is in Bathinda which returns to the Congress fold after well over 50 years.

The farmers' protest is said to have an impact on the results of local bodies in Punjab. Meanwhile, a tweet from Bollywood actress and Shiv Sena leader Urmila Matondkar is going viral after the election results in Punjab.

Reacting to the results of the local body elections in Punjab, Urmila Matondkar said, ‘#PunjabMunicipalElection2021 the Verdict is clear !!#FarmersMakelndia 🙏✊#Punjab.

Urmila Matondkar has directly linked BJP's defeat in Punjab to the farmers' movement. Her tweet has gone viral with few hours.

The outcome of the elections held against the backdrop of the farmers' agitation against the BJP-led government at the Centre has come as a boost for the Congress, which is also eyeing to win the assembly elections due early next year.  The farmers are protesting in Delhi against the three agricultural laws.
