Thiruvananthapuram (Keralam) [India], May 6 : Following the Keralam Assembly election results, Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Binoy Viswam on Wednesday admitted that the outcome was a clear defeat, but emphasised that the party would not dwell on it.
Addressing the media, Viswam said, "There is no other word for this except defeat. But we are not going to beat our chests and cry over it," acknowledging the party's loss but stressing the need for a thorough evaluation of the situation.
Viswam further noted that the result had surpassed the party's expectations and required a deeper understanding.
"The result has gone far beyond our expectations, and it needs to be studied seriously. The first step towards that is the party committee meetings that are going to be held. Party committees will meet in all districts, and detailed evaluations will be conducted everywhere. Based on those discussions, the State Council meeting will be convened soon. The party will make necessary corrections and move forward," he added.
The CPI leader reflected on some key factors that may have contributed to the party's poor showing.
"There were undercurrents that many of us failed to recognise. We will conduct a detailed study of the defeat. The controversies related to the Nadapuram candidature will also be examined. Every seat will be reviewed, and necessary corrections will be made," Viswam explained.
He stressed that "We never expected such a huge defeat."
Viswam also warned of the rising influence of the BJP in Kerala.
"The BJP's victory is a serious danger. Communist parties and secular forces must view it with utmost seriousness. It is not just about winning three seatsthe BJP has also secured second position in six constituencies. That itself is a major challenge," Viswam added.
Meanwhile, Congress has begun the process of government formation in Keralam where the party-led United Democratic Front (UDF) registered a thumping victory in the assembly polls.
Sources said that the party has appointed its leaders, Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik, as observers to know the views of its newly-elected MLAs to decide the choice of Chief Minister.
The Congress won 63 seats in the 140-member Keralam assembly. Its allies also performed well, with IUML getting 22 seats. Congress-led UDF ousted LDF from power after 10 years.
