GBS Outbreak: Surge in Guillain-Barre Syndrome Cases Across Pune, 17 Patients on Ventilators

The number of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in the state has surged to 111, with 17 patients currently on ventilators. The health department has conducted a survey of 25,578 houses in the affected areas. Among the total cases, 68 are men and 33 are women. The majority of patients, 62, are from Pune Rural, followed by 19 from Pune Municipal Corporation and 14 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Additionally, six patients from other districts are receiving treatment in Pune.

In response to the rising number of GBS cases, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has dispatched a high-level team of doctors to Pune. The central team from Maharashtra consists of seven experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Delhi, NIMHANS Bangalore, the Regional Office of Health and Family Welfare, and the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.

The breakdown of GBS cases is as follows:

  • Pune Rural: 62 patients
  • Pune Municipal Corporation Area: 19 patients
  • Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Area: 14 patients
