In recent years, incidents of illegal tree felling for Holi celebrations have come to light across the city. Taking serious note of this, the municipal administration has decided to enforce strict penalties. The municipal corporation has warned that anyone caught cutting down trees for Holi will face a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.

Holi will be celebrated in the city on Thursday, March 13. The festival is observed on a grand scale, with large amounts of wood and cowries used for bonfires. However, it has been observed that trees within forest department limits, along riverbanks, and in surrounding areas are often cut down in advance either for sale or for secret use during Holika Dahan. To curb this practice, the municipal corporation has issued a stern warning and will take penal action against violators.

According to the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees (Amendment) Act, 2021, cutting, burning, or damaging trees without a permit is a criminal offense. Violators will be fined based on a government-approved valuation formula, with penalties reaching up to ₹1 lakh.

How to Report Illegal Tree Felling

To ensure strict enforcement, the municipal corporation has launched a helpline for citizens to report unauthorized tree cutting. Residents are urged to cooperate and report any such activities through the following channels:

Toll-Free Number: 18001030222WhatsApp Number: 9689900002Mobile Numbers: 9689938523, 9689930024

Authorities urge citizens to help preserve the environment by celebrating an eco-friendly Holi and preventing illegal tree felling.
