Many people travel from Mumbai-Pune on daily basis, the travel takes at least 3 hours; to make travel faster and easier the Central Railway has prepared two detailed project reports to double the track between Karjat-Lonavala. They have been submitted to the Railway Board and the work on the project will start after getting approval, said senior officials of the Central Railway said. There was a plan to build two new tracks each on the two major ghat routes of Karjat-Lonavala in the South-Eastern part of the Central Railway and Kasara-Igatpuri in the North-eastern part. Out of these, proposals have been prepared for two tracks for the Karjat-Lonavala section.

Separate tunnels for both the routes

According to the railway proposal, the project will include underpasses and bridges. The proposal will have some single tunnels and both the routes will pass through them, while in some places there will be separate tunnels for both the routes. Although the existing route is 26 km, the new route will be about twice as long. Once this route is completed, an additional track will be created between Mumbai-Pune, which will make it possible to increase services, officials said. Also, as new stations will be built along with the new line, the development of the area will be boosted.

Since there are no ups and downs on the new line, the railways will not need to add additional banker engines. This will save about 20-20 minutes of time required for adding and removing bankers.
