Pune, Maharashtra (Wednesday, March 25, 2026): A 23-year-old MBA student died after suffering a severe electric shock from a water filter in the mess of the agriculture college in Pune. The victim, identified as Chaitanya Chavan, was a resident of Dongargaon in Ashti taluka of Beed district.

The incident occurred on March 14 between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the student cooperative mess, when Chavan went to drink water before dinner. He reportedly received a strong electric shock from a water filter and collapsed on the spot. He was admitted to a hospital and remained in critical condition for several days before dying on Tuesday.

Following his death, students launched an indefinite protest on campus, demanding strict action against those responsible and a detailed inquiry into the incident. Students alleged that the water cooler had been faulty for a long time and that multiple complaints had been ignored. Some reportedly said other students had also received electric shocks earlier.

The incident has raised concerns over electrical safety standards at the institution. Questions have been raised about how such equipment could remain unsafe in a prominent college.

According to the media reports, the college administration said an inquiry is underway and assured that appropriate action will be taken. Students, however, said they will continue their protest until their demands are met.

Chavan is survived by his father, two brothers and two sisters.
