A serious mishap was narrowly averted on Tuesday after a bus operated by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) on the Nigdi to Mahalunge MIDC route suddenly caught fire inside the Chakan Industrial Estate. The incident took place close to Mahendra Company, triggering alarm across the bustling industrial area. Within a short span, the flames engulfed the entire vehicle, reducing it to a shell. Fortunately, all passengers were evacuated in time, preventing any injuries. The dramatic episode unfolded rapidly, drawing attention from workers and commuters in the vicinity as thick smoke billowed into the sky.

Initial reports suggest that a short circuit may have sparked the blaze. The bus involved in the incident was said to be an electric vehicle deployed as a special service primarily for industrial employees commuting along the route. At the time the fire broke out, approximately 50 passengers were travelling inside the vehicle. The sudden emergency created a tense atmosphere among those on board, particularly given the packed schedule of workers heading to various factories in the industrial belt during peak operational hours on a busy weekday.

According to eyewitness accounts, smoke was first noticed emerging from the front portion of the bus, raising immediate concern among passengers. Recognising the potential danger, the driver and conductor acted swiftly, bringing the vehicle to a halt without delay. They promptly guided all commuters to disembark in an orderly manner, ensuring everyone moved to a safe distance. Their presence of mind and rapid response played a crucial role in preventing casualties, as the fire intensified shortly after the evacuation was completed.

Fire brigade personnel reached the location soon after receiving information about the blaze and began efforts to control the flames. Despite their quick response, the bus was completely gutted by the time the fire was fully extinguished. The incident led to temporary chaos in the area and caused traffic disruptions, as the industrial estate witnesses constant movement of workers, transport vehicles and company staff throughout the day. Authorities have launched a probe to ascertain the precise cause of the fire, and a detailed technical inspection of the PMPML vehicle has been sought to safeguard passengers in the future. Although no lives were lost, the incident has resulted in heavy financial damage and sparked concerns regarding safety standards in public transport operations.
