Pune: A shocking incident has come to light, were a daughter-in-law of female Sarpanch of Sortapwadi village committed suicide by hanging herself due to harassment over dowry. A case has been registered against four people, including the female Sarpanch, at the Uruli Kanchan police station.
Dipti Rohan Chaudhari, a Sarpanch residing in Kad Vasti, Sortapwadi, was identified as the woman who committed suicide by hanging on Saturday evening, January 24, 2026. Her mother has filed a complaint at the Uruli Kanchan police station. Married in 2019, Dipti was subjected to dowry demands and harassment by her in-laws shortly after the wedding.
According to her mother's complaint, despite repeated payments, the harassment continued, and Dipti was forced to undergo an abortion. The complaint also states that fifty tolas of gold ornaments and cash were given as dowry at the time of the marriage, yet the harassment persisted, ultimately driving Dipti to suicide due to unbearable mental pressure and physical torture.
Assistant Police Inspector Dnyaneshwar Bajgire is conducting the ongoing investigation.
