Pune Police have adopted a tough stance against drunken driving and announced stringent action against repeat offenders. If a motorist is caught driving under the influence of alcohol for the third time, after being booked twice earlier for the same offence, their vehicle will be seized. The warning was issued by Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar during a camp held in Shivajinagar, reported Maharashtra Times. He said the police will no longer show leniency towards drunk drivers, as such behaviour poses a serious threat to public safety. The move aims to deter habitual offenders and reduce alcohol-related road accidents across the city.

Commissioner Amitesh Kumar further stated that photographs of drunk drivers who violate traffic rules will be made public on official websites and social media platforms, reported Maharashtra Times. These images will also be shared with their friends and family members to create social accountability. He warned that such offenders could face public reprimand in busy intersections in a manner typical of police enforcement. Stressing the seriousness of the issue, he urged citizens to understand that the intention is not humiliation, but strong deterrence. The police, he said, are determined to ensure disciplined and responsible driving behaviour on Pune’s roads.

The police commissioner was speaking at a counselling and guidance camp organised under the Road Safety Abhiyan at the Shivajinagar Police Headquarters. As part of this initiative, nearly one thousand drivers who had earlier been booked for drunk driving were summoned to attend the session, reported Maharashtra Times. The programme focused on awareness, legal consequences, and responsible conduct. Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil and Deputy Commissioner Himmat Jadhav were also present at the event. Senior officers interacted with offenders and explained how strict enforcement would continue alongside education-based corrective measures.

Highlighting the human cost of drunken driving, Amitesh Kumar said that alcohol-impaired driving leads to many serious and fatal accidents. Innocent motorists and pedestrians often suffer due to the reckless actions of intoxicated drivers. In several cases, the mistake of one drunk driver destroys entire families and leaves lasting trauma. He stressed that such tragedies are completely avoidable and must not be repeated. The police commissioner made it clear that counselling camps of this nature will now be organised every week, reinforcing the message that drunk driving will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
