A visible change is underway on India’s roads. In several cities, a growing number of bike taxi and cab rides are now being operated by women, marking a shift in a sector that has traditionally been male-dominated.

According to Rapido, women now make up around 35 percent of its captain base, reflecting what the company describes as a gradual restructuring of workforce participation in urban mobility.

For decades, driving autos, taxis, and buses in India has largely remained out of reach for women due to safety concerns, social stigma, and lack of access to training and infrastructure. Gig-based mobility platforms, however, are beginning to alter that equation by offering flexible work hours and lower entry barriers.

Rapido says its Pink Mobility initiative is aimed at increasing women’s participation in the sector by focusing on flexible earning models and safety features. The company positions this as a response to India’s low female workforce participation rate, particularly among women who are unable to commit to fixed working hours due to childcare or domestic responsibilities.

Under the model, women captains can choose their working hours and operate for short durations during the day. The company claims this allows some women to combine household responsibilities with income-generating work.

Safety remains a central concern in women’s participation in mobility services. Rapido says its platform includes features such as real-time ride monitoring, emergency reporting tools, and customer grievance mechanisms, which apply to all users on the platform.

Co-founder Pavan Guntupalli said the company’s safety framework is designed around short and mid-distance urban travel, which makes up the bulk of daily commuting demand. “From behaviour monitoring to redressal systems, the focus is on accountability,” he said.

The company also highlighted its women-focused categories, including women-for-women ride options. Co-founder Aravind Sanka said Rapido currently has over 10,000 active women captains in Chennai, with many earning their primary income through the platform. The company claims average earnings can exceed ₹200 per hour, depending on hours worked and demand.

In Tier-2 cities, where social resistance to women driving remains stronger, the presence of women captains is gradually challenging traditional perceptions around gender roles in transport. Rapido says it supports these efforts through licence training programmes, emergency support, and partnerships with women-focused non-governmental organisations.

Beyond income generation, access to independent earnings can have broader social implications. Economists and gender-rights groups have long argued that financial autonomy plays a key role in improving women’s decision-making power within households.

As more women enter app-based mobility services, the change is becoming increasingly visible at traffic signals and pick-up points across Indian cities. Whether this trend scales sustainably across platforms and regions remains to be seen, but it signals a slow shift in who occupies public space behind the wheel.
