The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system reported down on Saturday afternoon, April 12, as several users were unable to do financial transactions online through Google Pay and PhonePe. The sudden outage affected businesses and individuals ' ability to send and receive money.

According to the outage tracking website Downdetector, over 2,000 users reported facing problems while accessing UPI until 1 p.m. today. Among those, 80% faced problems making payments, 18% were unable to transfer funds to merchant or individual accounts, and 2% were not able to purchase items via UPI. The outage affected users across different banks and platforms, pointing towards a wider network problem within the UPI infrastructure.

UPI is a popular instant payment system integrated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates under the supervision of the Reserve Bank of India. It enables users to transfer money instantly between bank accounts through mobile apps without any charges from NPCI.

Meanwhile, no official comments from the UPI or NPCI regarding the outage and reason for the technical issue.
