WhatsApp and Instagram Down: Users Unable to Access Meta-Owned Instant Messaging Apps and Services

The global instant messaging app WhatsApp is currently experiencing a widespread outage, causing disruptions for users worldwide. Many users have reported issues with sending and receiving messages, as well as updating their status. According to Downdetector, users began experiencing problems around 11:22 PM IST, reaching a peak at 11:37 PM IST with over 5,049 reports. However, the impact of the outage appears to be more widespread than initially thought. Within just 15-20 minutes of the app going down, the hashtag #whatsappdown started trending on Twitter.

Downdetector indicates that 70 percent of WhatsApp users are facing issues with the app, 24 percent are unable to receive messages, and 6 percent have witnessed issues with WhatsApp web. Times Now employees have also reported issues with the app and WhatsApp web, receiving a message stating, "We're having trouble connecting to WhatsApp. Please try again in a few minutes."

Notably, the outage doesn't stop at WhatsApp; Meta's Instagram app is also facing difficulties. Along with #WhatsAppdown, the hashtag #Instagramdown is trending on Twitter. Downdetector confirms that Instagram is down with over 4538 reports, peaking at around 11:37 PM IST. Sixty-one percent of users are experiencing problems with the Instagram app, 28 percent are finding it difficult to refresh the feed, and 11 percent are unable to log in.

Netizens have flocked to Twitter to express their frustrations with the outages, taking a break from WhatsApp and Instagram. The social media outage has led to a surge in complaints on Twitter.
