The voting for the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) was held on January 15, and the counting of votes is underway today. The counting of votes began a little late, around 10:30 am instead of 10 am in Thane. The Mahayuti is leading with 28 seats in Thane out of 131 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena fought this election together. BJP got 10 seats, Shiv Sena got 18, Shiv Sena UBT got 1, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) got 1, Nationalist Congress Party (SP) got 6, and Nationalist Congress Party (AP) got 6, and Congress got 1 seat (Updates till 12:30 pm).
Seven candidates from Eknath Shinde’s party had won unopposed. In Ward No. 18-B, Shiv Sena candidate Jayshree Phatak was elected unopposed. In Ward No. 18-A, Shiv Sena candidate Sukhada More was elected unopposed. In Ward No. 17-A, Shiv Sena candidate Ekta Bhoir was elected unopposed. In Ward No. 18-D, Shiv Sena candidate Ram Repale was elected unopposed. In Ward No. 14-A, Shiv Sena candidate Sheetal Dhamale was elected unopposed. In Ward No. 5-A, Shiv Sena candidate Sulekha Sudhakar Chavan was elected unopposed. In Ward No. 5-B, Shiv Sena candidate Jayshree David was elected unopposed.
Chaos was witnessed in Thane as the counting of votes was underway. Activists argued with the police over inadequate facilities at the center at Joshi Bedekar College.
There are 33 wards in the Thane Municipal Corporation. The total number of voters in the Thane Municipal Corporation stands at 16,49,867 voters, of which 8,67,878 are male voters, while 7,85,830 are female voters.
The Thane Municipal Corporation recorded a voter turnout of 55.59% this year, marking a decline compared to the 58% turnout registered during the 2017 civic elections. In 2017, Shiv Sena (United Front) had won the election. It got 67 seats, while the United Front of NCP won 34 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 23 seats, Indian National Congress (INC) won 3 seats, and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won 2 seats in 2017.
