Thane is facing a huge water crisis. The water shortage situation is worsening with each passing day. Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is taking measures to curb this situation. The civic body has announced the immediate closure of all the vehicle washing service centres across the city until June 10. They have taken this decision as the water level in the reservoirs continues to decline. This is happening because of the intense summer heat and lack of rainfall. TMC’s decision to shut down the vehicle cleaning service aims to save water and ensure that the supply for household and municipal needs remains uninterrupted.

TMC prohibits washing of all types of vehicles like two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and heavy vehicles like trucks, tempos, etc. If anyone is found violating this order of TMC, then strict action will be taken against them, including fine imposition.

The civic body officials stated that the water level in the wells and borewells in Thane is dropping rapidly. This is raising concerns about the water crisis. The officials also highlighted that they are taking this preventive measure as it is a part of a broader strategy to save and manage water resources efficiently during this summer season. An official said that saving water is now more important than ever. They are closely monitoring the reservoir levels, and restrictions will be imposed if the situation worsens.

There might be limitations imposed on non-essential water usage across Thane. More decisions regarding the implementation of measures to save water will be taken after consulting with the municipal commissioner and other concerned departments. Until then, the primary focus will be on reducing activities that use a lot of water without need. Vehicle washing facilities, which use thousands of litres per day, have been identified as a major sector where conservation can be achieved without jeopardising important services.

Thane’s civic body is also asking residents and businesses to cooperate fully and contribute to water-saving efforts. Authorities stated that if water is conserved now, it can prevent a much larger water crisis in the future. By imposing restrictions, the administration is trying to manage the existing crisis and to prevent a situation where more strict measures may become necessary.
