Following encouraging feedback from citizens, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has directed civic officials to increase the number of green shades at major traffic signals and temporary drinking water stations across the city to help residents cope with the ongoing heatwave. The civic body had earlier set up these facilities at key junctions, which have proven popular among commuters and motorists. Rao has asked the Public Works and Environment departments to expand the initiative, especially at signals where waiting time exceeds 60 seconds.
The civic body’s Heat Action Plan, introduced last year, includes installing temporary drinking water stations with the help of NGOs. This year, 25 such units have been set up, but Rao noted that rising temperatures have created the need for more, and suggested they be installed through community participation and NGO collaboration.
Currently, green shade installations are already in place at key traffic junctions like Teen Hath Naka (2), Almeida Chowk (1), Khopat (2), and Nitin Company (1), offering some relief to drivers from the scorching sun. These will now be extended to other long-wait signals in the city.
During a review meeting held at the Arvind Pendse Hall in the TMC headquarters, Rao also assessed the progress of the state government’s 100-day program, implementation of the e-office system, Swachh Survekshan preparations, and heatwave mitigation strategies. Present at the meeting were Additional Commissioners Sandeep Malvi and Prashant Rode, along with department heads and key engineers.
Pre-monsoon preparations were also discussed. Rao reviewed trimming of dangerous tree branches, nullah cleaning tenders, and progress of the “Pothole-Free Thane” campaign. He stressed the need for preventive measures at recurring pothole spots and urged officials to explore innovative solutions. He further instructed that all road repair complaints should be resolved within 24 hours, continuing last year’s coordination efforts among various civic departments.
