Sahar Shaikh, a winning corporator of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), is the most searched on the internet and her videos of her speech is making rounds on social sites. Following her decisive victory in Ward 30 of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) elections 2026, a viral video of her victory speech has ignited a statewide debate, positioning the newcomer as a direct challenger to established political heavyweights.
The ‘Paint Mumbra Green’ Controversy
The controversy stems from a victory procession in Thane's Mumbra, where Shaikh addressed a large crowd of supporters. In the footage, she is heard asserting that AIMIM would "paint all of Mumbra green" in the coming five years, vowing that every winning candidate from the area would eventually belong to her party.
The remarks were swiftly condemned by the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction as "provocative." However, Shaikh has since clarified her stance, stating that her comments were strictly political and referred to her party’s flag colour. "My party's flag is green," she told reporters. "I was referring to AIMIM's political growth. If our flag were saffron, I would have used that colour instead."
Who Is Sahar Shaikh?
Sahar Shaikh’s entry into politics is deeply rooted in local rivalry. She is the daughter of Yunus Sheikh, a veteran local leader who served as the Mumbra Block President for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) since its inception.
The family’s shift to AIMIM occurred just before the 2026 civic polls. Yunus Sheikh had reportedly sought an NCP ticket for his daughter, which was denied by senior leader Jitendra Awhad. In response, both father and daughter joined Asaduddin Owaisi’s party. The move proved successful, as Sahar not only secured her seat but led an AIMIM panel to victory in a traditional NCP stronghold.
How Old Is Sahar Shaikh?
At just 22 years of age, Sahar Shaikh represents a new generation of politicians leveraging social media to bypass traditional gatekeepers. Often referred to by supporters as the "Hijabwali Corporator," she boasts a significant digital footprint with over 340,000 followers on Instagram.
Her campaign was focused heavily on youth engagement and infrastructure issues, contrasting her "outsider" status with the "arrogance" she claims has characterised the long-standing leadership in Mumbra. Political analysts suggest her victory signifies a shift in the minority vote, where younger voters are increasingly drawn to more assertive political identities.
Who Is Sahar Shaikh's Husband?
Despite the intense public interest in her personal background following the viral video, Sahar Shaikh has kept her private life relatively personal. Public records and local reports indicate that her primary focus remains on her professional duties and her role within the AIMIM youth wing.
