Gautam Biswas is presently a professor of mechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Earlier, he has been the director of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, and director of the CSIR - Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute at Durgapur.
