Aurangabad, Jan 25:Thousands of youths from the city who recovered from Novel coronavirus successfully, are experiencing ‘after-effects’. One of the after-effects is weight gaining. A total of recovered patients have weight gain.The post-COVID Out-Patients Department (OPD) was started at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and District Civil Hospital (DCH). If any cured patients have any health issue, they can consult the doctors.The number of such patients is high in GMCH where 2,244 people cured of COVID.A total of 69 pc (1,548) has no other disease while 31 pc (696) had diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease etc. They were put on oxygen during the treatment and they won the battle with the pandemic virus. These patients are facing the problem of weight gain. A total of 46,763 patients were reported from the district while 45,390 recovered. Three to four persons among every ten had a complaint of weight gaining. The highest number of complaints were received from those who are 50 and above years age.Some patients said that they gained weight up to five kg. They said that they consulted the doctors who advised a diet plan. “Efforts are being made to keep weight under control,” they added.Doctors feel that steroid was included in the treatment protocols for COVID-19 patients and cause weight gain.“It is given for minimum ten days and in case of a serious patient until he or she is recovered,” they said. Head of the Medicine Department of GMCH Dr Meenakshi Bhattacharya said that oxygen level goes down when patients do exercise.“It becomes difficult for recovered patients to perform an exercise. Patients should have a diet which has more protein and avoid greasy food items,” she added.
