The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, was approved by Parliament after a 12-hour debate, with the Rajya Sabha voting in the early hours of Friday. In the upper chamber, the bill was approved with 128 votes in favour and 95 against. After this bill was passed, several Muslim Community people who are not in favor of this bill stepped out and started to protest across India. Thousands of people gathered on the streets after their weekly Friday prayer. Visuals of a massive protest have surfaced from West Bengal. The crowd can be seen waving the national flag and carrying posters proclaiming “We reject Waqf Amendment” and “Reject Waqf Bill.” News Agency ANI reported that many of the protests were organised by the Joint Forum for Waqf Protection.In Bangaluru, protesters were seen holding placards that read, “Humara Waqf humara haq, hume ye bill manjoor nahi. (Our Waqf is our right, and we do not support this bill.) They were also seen sloganeering, “Waqf par hamla nahi sahegay (We won’t resist attack on Waqf),” “Modi Sarkar Murdabaad,” “Save Waqf Save Constitution,” and many more slogans.In Mumbai, members of the Muslim community staged a protest at the Sunni Masjid against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, recently passed in Parliament. The protesters wore black ribbons and raised slogans opposing the bill.Similar incidents happened in Chennai when a nationwide protest was announced by actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. 'Reject the Waqf Bill' and 'do not take away Muslims' rights' were among the slogans chanted by TVK members who assembled in Chennai and other major cities, including Coimbatore and Chennai, reported ANI.Taking strict action, the police detained over 50 people in Ahmedabad, Gujarat for protesting against the bill. Serious questions concerning the possible abuse of Waqf for private benefit are brought up by this circumstance.The BJP has suggested changes to the Waqf Act to solve these controversial concerns under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Waqf Amendment Bill aims to prohibit the misuse of Waqf properties, improve transparency, and impose stronger controls. It highlights how crucial it is to make sure Waqf lands are used for the philanthropic reasons for which they were intended, requiring careful claim verification and enforcing stricter regulations on business operations. Supporters of these reforms contend that they are necessary to prevent exploitation and provide equitable administration, despite opposition from certain Islamic organisations.
