5,024 EVMs required for ZP, PS Elections

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The district administration has geared up for the Zilla Parishad (ZP) and Panchayat Samiti (PS) elections.

District Collector and District Election Officer Deelip Swami informed the media on Saturday about the election schedule and preparations.

Around 5,024 electronic voting machines (EVMs) and 2,512 control units will be required in the district for the elections. The machines will be procured from Nanded. A total of 3,048 control units and EVM will be made available.

The District Collector said that the EVM would undergo first-level checking at the district level and would then be sent to the level of the Returning Officers.

ZP CEO Ankit, Superintendent of Police Dr Vinaykumar Rathod, Resident Deputy Collector Janardan Vidhate and Deputy Collector Sangeeta Rathod were present.

Requirement of over 10,000 Personnel

Voters will exercise their franchise at 2,282 polling stations. For this purpose, 10,048 officers and employees will be required, while manpower availability stands at around 12,000.

Administrative processes such as deployment of personnel, training, and formation of various committees have been completed.

For the election process, there will be 9 Returning Officers and 9 Assistant Returning Officers in the district. “Control over all the process will be maintained from the district-level office,” said Swami.

Meeting on Licensed Weapons on Monday

“With the Model Code of Conduct now in force in the district, a meeting will be held on January 19 regarding the deposit of licensed weapons and externment cases,” said Dr Rathod, the Superintendent of Police.

The police machinery is fully prepared for the elections. The district has 193 officers, 300 police personnel, and 1,932 home guards available.

Additionally, three companies of the State Reserve Police Force will be requisitioned from outside the district. Preventive measures are being taken, and action is being initiated against anti-social elements. “Weapon deposit procedures and other preventive measures are also underway,” Rathod added.

ZP and PS elections are being held simultaneously. So, each voter will cast one vote for the ZP electoral division and one vote for the PS electoral college. Thus, each voter is expected to cast two votes. The final electoral roll, finalised on 1 July 2005, will be considered valid.
