Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The administration of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Bamu) earned Rs 10 lakh through auctioning of mango trees of different varieties recently.

The campus of the university is spread over 725 acres of land. An orchard of fruits was developed on 142 acres of land in 2006-08. Nearly 7,215 trees of mango, Sapota (Chikoo), custard apple (Sitaphal), Indian gooseberry (amla) and tamarind (Imli) were cultivated on this land.

Garden superintendent of Bamu Kishor Nirmal said that there are 1350 mango trees on the campus. “Of them, 300 mango trees of varieties of Keshar, Langda, Hoor and Gawran bore fruit this year. The mangoes are ripened in an organic way. This year, the fruits of the trees were auctioned at Rs 10 lakh to a private,” he said. He said the sale of mangoes would start in the first week of May.

Rise in revenue

Around 150 trees bore fruit last year and their fruits were auctioned at Rs 4 lakh. This year, the number of fruit-bearing trees rose by 300 due to good climate and care. Their fruit was auctioned at Rs 10 lakh. A total of Rs 6 lakh increase in the revenue of the campus. Staff members of the campus purchase most of the stock of mangoes due to its ripening process.
