Aurangabad, May 21:

Online sale of liquor is booming during the lockdown. Despite the decline in beer sales, liquor worth around Rs 3 crore was sold in the city. However, as liquor shops are closed, there is no official record.

The sale of liquor was stopped during the lockdown as it was feared that people would crowd liquor shops. But the revenue declined due to the closure of shops. Hence the production was resumed. At present, three lakh liters of liquor is sold in the city on a monthly basis, including country and foreign liquor and beer. Even though the liquor stores are closed, online sales are booming. Even though all the shops were closed during the lockdown, alcohol was being sold in black market. State excise department has taken action in 32 such places.

Online sale of alcohol allowed

Online liquor sales are permitted so that the prevalence of coronavirus does not increase. Beer shops are closed. Foreign liquor is sold by booking online. Recently, beer shops have also been allowed to sell online. Since the shops were closed last year and this year, it is not possible to tell the exact figure of the revenue generated in past two months until the official figures are available, said Sudhakar Kadam, superintendent, state excise department.
