In a shocking incident, family members of a 35-year-old mentally ill man allegedly threw chilli powder into his eyes after he turned aggressive at his home in a village around 30 km from the city.
The man had been undergoing psychiatric treatment, but his family had reportedly stopped his medication after his condition improved. On Wednesday night, he allegedly became violent, prompting the family to seek help from a private hospital. Before the ambulance arrived, family members allegedly used chilli powder to restrain him. A medical team later cleaned his eyes and started treatment. Doctors advised that mentally ill patients should be treated calmly, medicines should not be stopped midway without medical advice, and professional help should be sought if patients become aggressive. Psychiatrist Dr. Meraj Qadri said sudden discontinuation of psychiatric medication can worsen a patient’s condition.
