Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

The district’s girl child birth ratio has declined to 897 girls per 1,000 boys, raising suspicions of illegal sex determination and violations under the PCPNDT Act.

At the district PCPNDT advisory committee meeting on Thursday, district collector Vinay Gowda GC directed authorities to inspect all sonography centres, abortion clinics, and medical stores allegedly selling abortion pills without prescriptions. District Civil Surgeon Dr Kamlakar Mudkhedkar, Dr Abhay Dhanorkar, Dr Paras Mandlecha, Dr Padmaja Saraf, Dr Prashant Badhe and officials of the food and drug administration attended the meeting.

The Collector ordered inspections of registered as well as illegal abortion and sonography centres, including centres that are currently closed. He stressed strict action against illegal sex determination practices.

Gowda also directed the FDA to investigate the source and sale of abortion pills, especially those being sold without doctors’ prescriptions, and to take strict action, including cancellation of licences of medical stores violating norms.
