The HWPL International Workshop on Peace Journalism Studies was held online recently, bringing together around 220 journalists worldwide to deliberate on solutions-oriented reporting and the challenge of news avoidance.

Under the theme “Reporting Solutions in the Age of News Avoidance,” the workshop examined how media can reduce polarization and contribute to peace-building. Speakers emphasised moving beyond conflict-focused narratives to highlight root causes, affected communities and constructive pathways. Achmad Yani of Indonesia’s Indepthnews.id presented research on international coverage of the Thailand–Cambodia conflict, noting that most reports focused on military tensions while sidelining the experiences of displaced civilians. He called for victim-centred reporting that explores peaceful alternatives. Ida Yusnita of mediabanjarmasin.com described peace as a human right grounded in security, equality and justice, urging responsible journalism, tolerance education and stronger independent media. José Nicolás Arroyo Ramos from the Dominican Republic warned against “discursive violence” in digital media, where emotionally driven content deepens division.
