Married woman harassed for Rs 10 lakh;
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
A case has been registered against a husband and seven members of his family for allegedly subjecting a married woman to physical and mental harassment over a demand of Rs 10 lakh to start a medical agency. Based on the victim’s complaint, Ajanta police registered the case on Saturday night around 9 pm.
According to the complaint filed by Tehsinnaaz Salman Shaikh (25, resident of Shivna, Sillod tehsil), she married Shaikh Salman of Dhawda on November 19, 2020. She alleged that her husband and in-laws treated her well only for the first six months. Thereafter, they began harassing her physically and mentally, accusing her of immoral character and demanding money. She also alleged that she was forced to consume sleeping pills and was repeatedly driven out of the house.
After she returned to her parental home, her father and villagers attempted reconciliation. However, on March 25, she was again expelled from the house with a demand to bring Rs 10 lakh from her parents to start a medical agency, the complaint stated.
Unable to bear the harassment, she had approached the women’s grievance redressal centre in Sillod on March 6. However, she alleged that her husband and in-laws threatened her, saying they wanted a divorce and warned that she would be killed if she returned to live with them.
Following this, Tehsinnaaz approached Ajanta police station on Saturday and lodged a formal complaint. Accordingly, a case has been registered against her husband, mother-in-law Ferozabi Shaikh Jabbar, elder brother-in-law Shaikh Ashpak, sister-in-law Arsheen Shaikh Ashpak, niece Rahatsaba Rahimkhan, Firdos Shaikh and Mohammad Ahmed (all residents of Dhawda, Bhokardan tehsil, Jalna district).
