Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
Office-bearers, workers and citizens of the Islam Party staged a ‘Handa Morcha’ at the municipal corporation headquarters on Monday evening, demanding water supply once every two days and reduction of water tax. Raising slogans, protesters later submitted a memorandum to mayor Sameer Rajurkar and municipal commissioner Amol Yedge.
The march, which began at 4.30 pm, saw women participating with empty water pots. Protesters demanded that the water tax be reduced to Rs 1,200 and supply be ensured on alternate days. The party, which recently secured significant success in the Malegaon municipal corporation elections and has begun expanding in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, described this as its first major civic agitation in the city. In the memorandum, it stated that GVPR was assigned to construct 54 water tanks, but only 12 have been completed. It also alleged pending internal pipeline work in several colonies and demanded that water pipelines be prioritised in minority, Dalit and slum areas. Islam Party leader and former corporator Kaleem Qureshi, Rafat Yar Khan and other workers were present.
