Muslim brethren busy is donating Zakat and Fitra

It may sound surprising, but in Islam, every wealthy person is considered indebted to the poor. Over fourteen centuries ago, Islam established this principle to ensure social balance. Even after paying Zakat, a person’s responsibility towards society does not end. The concept aims to prevent the widening gap between the rich and the poor. This year too, the traditional distribution of Zakat and Fitra has begun.

During the holy month of Ramzan, it is obligatory for Muslims to give Zakat and Fitra, and large-scale distribution is currently underway. Explaining the concept, Maulana Rashid Madani said that Zakat is compulsory for every financially sound (eligible) Muslim. Anyone possessing wealth equivalent to approximately 7.5 tolas of gold or more must donate 2.5% of their assets as Zakat to the poor. Ideally, this amount should first be given to needy relatives; if none are eligible, it may be distributed elsewhere.

What is Fitra?

Maulana Madani further explained that Fitra must be given before the Eid ul-Fitr prayers. It is offered as “Sadaqa for life” in the name of each family member, including even a newborn child. Typically, around two kilograms of staple food per person is distributed to the needy. If a recipient prefers money instead of grain, it may be given in cash.

If a child is born before the iftar on the last day of fasting, Fitra must be given in their name. However, if the child is born after iftar, it is not obligatory. The principles of Zakat and Fitra are designed to maintain social harmony and economic balance within society and bring smiles on the faces of community men on this auspicious occasion.
