Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
Water pumping from the jackwell constructed at the Jayakwadi Dam resumed on Monday. Water is expected to reach the Nakshatrawadi water treatment plant on Tuesday. The water will undergo continuous treatment for seven days and will be supplied to citizens only after certification confirming that it is fit for drinking.
The Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) is now planning the process to ensure that additional water supply can begin in the city from June 12.
The Bombay High Court has directed authorities to provide an additional 200 MLD of water to the city from June 12. Over the past two to three days, GVPR Company had undertaken repair works of the scour valve and butterfly valve. Following the completion of repairs, pumping operations began on Monday at 9 am, and water extraction from the jackwell resumed.
Water started being transported to the city at the rate of 45 lakh litres per hour. By 5 pm, the water had reportedly reached Kaudgaon. A second pump was activated in the afternoon, enabling another 45 lakh litres per hour to be pumped towards the city.
Successful water treatment crucial
Even after water reaches the treatment plant on Tuesday, the purification process remains complex. The procedure includes adding the required quantity of bleaching powder, determining the correct proportion of purification chemicals, processing the water at the treatment facility, conducting quality tests and completing internal operational works over a seven-day period. Before water is released into the Master Balancing Reservoir (MBR), all inspections and mandatory certifications must be completed.
What was done in one month?
On April 14, a successful trial of the 2,500 mm diameter main water pipeline was conducted, and water from Jayakwadi had reached Nakshatrawadi. However, questions are now being raised over what work was carried out by MJP and GVPR Company during the past month.
Despite the peak summer season, authorities could not provide even an additional 60 to 70 MLD of water to the city. Now, with the monsoon approaching, announcements are being made about supplying an additional 200 MLD of water to residents.
