Nullahs in old city choked with garbage

Aurangabad, May 16:

Municipal corporation has decided to clean the nullahs on its own and not through the contractor. Although the municipal administration is claiming that 70 per cent of nullahs have been cleaned, the ground reality is different. Many nullahs in the old towns have been filled with garbage. In addition, the unseasonal rain has made it worse.

There are 20 major nullahs in the city. These major nullahs have 70 small connecting nullahs. A tender is floated from the municipal administration every year before the monsoon for cleaning the nullahs. Nearly two crore rupees are spent on the cleaning work. This year, the administration decided not to appoint a private contractor. On the contrary, the ward officials were asked to undertake the cleaning work. Two days ago, the officials of the municipal corporation claimed that 70 per cent of the nullahs in the city have been cleaned. Every year, the corporators keep an eye on the work. But this year their office bearers have not taken any note of the work. Meanwhile, the nullah from Kala Darwaza to Kileark is filled with garbage. The citizens of the area said that the municipal corporation did not even lift a bucket of garbage. Every year the residents of the area have to endure tremendous difficulties. The citizens have said that the problems will increase during the rainy season this year. However, ward engineer Kashinath Katkar said that the garbage was removed earlier. But more garbage got deposited in the nullah. It will be removed soon.
