Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Auditorium in Cidco is now set to be privatised on the lines of Sant Eknath Rangamandir. The Mayor and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Commissioner themselves admitted that this auditorium has become a "white elephant" for the civic body.
Within just ten years, the auditorium fell into a sorry state due to a lack of maintenance and repairs. Technical defects, water leakage, and malfunctions in the sound and lighting systems were affecting cultural events.
Finally, a revival project was undertaken for Rs 12 crore. Renovation work is underway through the Smart City initiative, with 40% of the work still remaining.
Once completed, Smart City will hand it over to the Municipal Corporation, after which the Standing Committee will decide whether to privatise it or run it under CSMC management.
However, given past experience, the Corporation is not inclined to run the auditorium itself. Financial losses, lack of manpower, and management difficulties clearly signal a handover to private management.
The deadline for completing the work is March 31, and the Mayor will personally visit soon to assess the quality of the work. Citizens are watching closely to see whether privatisation will bring quality events, regular maintenance, and financial sustainability.

Privatisation is only option
The CSMC built Sant Eknath Rangamandir and Sant Tukaram Auditorium, which was transferred to us by Cidco. However, managing them professionally is not our strength. To ensure artists get excellent facilities and the auditorium runs continuously, privatisation is the only option.

White Elephant
Just like Sant Eknath Rangamandir, Sant Tukaram auditorium will also be privatised, because it has become a white elephant for the CSMC. The next decision will be taken only through a transparent tender process. That is the practical way forward.

Privatise, but no arbitrary rule
We were the ones who demanded the privatisation of Sant Eknath Rangamandir. But the contractor there started acting arbitrarily — that has been a bitter experience. We are not opposed to privatising Sant Tukaram Maharaj Auditorium, but the contractor should not impose harsh rules or excessive charges. No arbitrary conduct.
