In a shocking case of financial fraud, Rs 9 lakh was withdrawn from the bank account of an 80-year-old retired doctor using her missing cheque at the Yes Bank branch on Adalat Road. A case has been registered against two unidentified women at the Kranti Chowk police station.
According to police, the complainant, Dr Asmat Mukhtar, is a retired medical practitioner who holds an account with the bank. One of her cheques had gone missing a few days earlier. In April, two unidentified women visited the bank with the cheque and inquired about the balance in her account. After learning that Rs 9 lakh was available, they returned the next day. The women submitted the cheque and sought withdrawal of the entire Rs 9 lakh. As the branch initially did not have sufficient cash, staff reportedly suggested withdrawing Rs 2 lakh. However, the women insisted that the full amount was urgently required for hospital-related work and requested a single payment. On April 8, the bank handed over Rs 9 lakh to them. A few days later, Dr Mukhtar discovered the withdrawal and approached the bank, where she was informed that two women had encashed the cheque. She then filed a complaint with the police. An offence of cheating has been registered, and sub-inspector Sudhakar Patil is conducting the investigation.
