Aurangabad, Nov 21:

The Aurangabad Division Bench of Bombay High Court ordered to issue notices to the state government, state solicitor general, divisional commissioner, Beed District Collector, and Majalgaon Municipal Council, following a petition challenging the provision to select the city president from among the corporators.

The hearing was held before the division bench comprising Justice S V Gangapurwal and Justice R G Avchat. The next hearing will be held after six weeks.

Majalgaon Municipal Council corporator Vinayak Ratnaparkhe submitted the petition through Adv Siddheshwar Thombre. He requested through the plea that the city president should be selected directly from the public as per the provision of 2016 and if the post gets vacant, the president should be elected from the public again.

The municipal corporation Act was amended in 2016 and a provision was made to elect the city president directly from the public. According, the city president at the Majalgaon Municipal Council was selected directly from the public. However, the Beed District collector by an order issued on June 28, 2020 declared the president ineligible as he was absent at the municipal council for the period of three months continuously.

Meanwhile, the government in the state changed and a provision was made to select the city president from the corporators. Accordingly, the city president was elected on November 8, 2020.
