The statue of Basaveshwar will soon be unveiled at Smriti Udyan near TV Centre in the presence of the chief minister and deputy chief ministers, said OBC welfare minister Atul Save. He urged people to celebrate Basaveshwar’s birth anniversary collectively rather than holding separate events. Former MP Chandrakant Khaire added that from next year, the jayanti will be celebrated together near the statue.
They were speaking at a flag-hoisting programme organised at Mahatma Basaveshwar Chowk (Akashvani) on the occasion of Basaveshwar jayanti by the district festival committee and Shiva Akhil Bharatiya Veerashaiva Yuva Organisation. Guardian minister Sanjay Shirsat, MLC Sanjay Kenekar, former MP Bhagwat Karad, BJP state vice-president Basavaraj Mangrule, deputy mayor Rajendra Janjal, former legislative council opposition leader Ambadas Danve, former mayor Tryambak Tupe and several others were present.
Vehicle rally by district festival committee
A vehicle rally was organised in the morning by the district festival committee, starting from Jagat Jyoti Mahatma Basaveshwar Smriti Udyan. The rally passed through TV Centre, M-2, Bajrang Chowk, Avishkar Colony, Connaught Place, Gajanan Maharaj Temple and Trimurti Chowk before reaching Mahatma Basaveshwar Chowk. Several organisers and participants were present on the occasion.
Vehicle rally by Shiva organisation
A separate rally was also organised by the Shiva organisation from Akashvani Chowk. It passed through Paithan Gate, City Chowk and the Collector’s Office before reaching Basaveshwar Smriti Udyan. Founder and national president Prof Manohar Dhonde, national vice-president Abhayrao Kallawar and other office-bearers were present.
Demand to inaugurate Basaveshwar pillar as well
Prof Manohar Dhonde demanded that along with the unveiling of the equestrian statue of Basaveshwar at Smriti Udyan, the proposed Basaveshwar pillar at Akashvani Chowk should also be inaugurated.
