Survey of Kham-Sukhna rivers underway
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
The city’s famous Kham and Sukhna rivers flow through various residential areas in the city. The settlements around the riverbeds are at risk of flooding. To address this, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has initiated a survey to demarcate the river boundaries and establish flood control lines. According to sources, the river limits will be finalised and flood control lines marking would be done before the monsoon season.
During the monsoon, the Kham riverbed fills only after Harsul Lake overflows. The Sukhna river originates near the Sawangi area. The Naregaon and Chikalthana areas have previously experienced flood impacts twice. Over the past few years, the municipal corporation has been making significant efforts to restore the Kham and Sukhna riverbeds. Under the Centre’s Namami Gange programme and the State Government’s Majhi Vasundhara project, work is being undertaken to deepen and widen the rivers.
The WRD has now begun a detailed survey of the Sukhna river. Teams of water resources officers and staff are conducting the survey to demarcate the riverbeds and establish flood control lines.
