Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
In a special six-hour drive, traffic police found as many as 830 motorists driving recklessly on the wrong side across major areas in the city. The action, carried out between 11 am and 5 pm on Tuesday, exposed the alarming level of indiscipline on the roads.
Traffic congestion has become a persistent issue at several locations in the city. Commuters frequently face heavy traffic jams at Mondha Naka, Deolai Chowk, Roplekar Chowk and Gopal Tea Point. Encroachments, improperly parked vehicles and motorists driving against traffic further worsen the situation. In this backdrop, commissioner of police Pravin Pawar and deputy commissioner Sharmistha Gharage-Walawalkar had ordered strict action against such violators on April 7.
Rs 5.30 lakh fine in six hours
A special drive was conducted between 11 am and 5 pm at Mondha Naka, High Court Signal, District and Sessions Court area, Bhagwan Mahavir Chowk and Waluj area. During the operation, 830 motorists were caught driving on the wrong side. A total fine of Rs 5.30 lakh was imposed on them, informed assistant commissioner of police (Traffic) Subhash Bhujang.
Drive to continue
According to police observations, many motorists continue to drive on the wrong side even during office hours. Due to the system of online fines, some violators act recklessly despite the presence of police personnel. Officials have clarified that strict action against such motorists will continue on a daily basis.
