West Indies Cricket Team vs England Cricket Team Match Scorecard: Sherfane Rutherford struck an unbeaten 76 and Gudakesh Motie claimed three wickets as West Indies defeated England by 30 runs in a key Group C match of the T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.
Rutherford’s 42-ball knock, which included five sixes and two fours, lifted West Indies to 196 for six after a shaky start. Motie then led a disciplined spin attack to bowl England out for 166 in 19 overs.
Chasing 197, England began strongly with Phil Salt attacking from the outset. Salt smashed 30 off 14 balls, including 24 runs in one over from Jason Holder, as England raced to 67 for one in the powerplay.
However, West Indies pulled things back through their spinners. Motie removed Tom Banton and Jacob Bethell in quick succession, using turn and grip from the surface to reduce England to 93 for four at the halfway stage.
England skipper Harry Brook (17) fell to a sharp return catch by Motie, while Roston Chase trapped Will Jacks leg before wicket. Akeal Hosein also chipped in as England slipped to 135 for six after 15 overs.
Sam Curran fought till the end with an unbeaten 43, but wickets kept falling at the other end as England failed to build partnerships.
Earlier, West Indies were in trouble at 79 for four in 10 overs. Rutherford steadied the innings with a 51-run stand alongside Rovman Powell (14) and then added 61 runs off 32 balls with Holder, who struck 33 off 17 deliveries with four sixes.
Chase also contributed 34 at No. 4 to anchor the middle phase. Adil Rashid was England’s best bowler with two for 16, generating sharp turn and dismissing both Chase and Powell.
West Indies had slipped to eight for two early after Shai Hope and Brandon King were dismissed inside the first two overs. Shimron Hetmyer made 23 before falling to Jamie Overton, who finished with two for 33.
The win strengthens West Indies’ position in Group C, while England now face pressure in their remaining matches to qualify for the Super 8 stage.
