Pakistan were found to be eight overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration following their 104-run defeat to Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.

The penalty has significantly affected Pakistan’s standing in the WTC table. Shan Masood’s side now have only four points and are placed eighth, just above the West Indies.

Bangladesh secured the victory with a dominant bowling performance on the final day, led by fast bowler Nahid Rana, who claimed a five-wicket haul to help the hosts seal a memorable win.

The sanction was imposed by match referee Jeff Crowe from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time.

In addition, Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions states that a team loses one championship point for each over short, resulting in Pakistan losing eight WTC points.

Pakistan captain Shan Masood accepted the offence and the proposed sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Kumar Dharmasena, along with third umpire Allahuddien Palekar and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel.

Pakistan will now look to bounce back in the second and final Test against Bangladesh, scheduled to begin on May 16 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
