IPL 2026: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed Akash Madhwal as a replacement for injured batter Ayush Mhatre for the remainder of Indian Premier League 2026. Mhatre has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury after making a promising start to the season. Madhwal has joined the squad for a fee of INR 30 lakh as CSK look to strengthen their bowling resources.

Madhwal began his IPL journey as a net bowler with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2019 before being signed by Mumbai Indians in 2022 as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav. He did not feature that season but earned opportunities in 2023, when he impressed with 14 wickets in eight matches.

His standout performance came in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants, where he returned figures of 5 for 5. He played five matches in the 2024 season, picking up five wickets.

At the 2025 auction, Madhwal attracted interest from multiple franchises, with Rajasthan Royals securing his services. However, he featured in only four matches before being released and went unsold in the subsequent auction.

CSK’s move comes amid injury concerns within the squad. The team had already lost Nathan Ellis before the start of the season, while Khaleel Ahmed was ruled out midway through the campaign.

Madhwal’s addition provides depth to the pace attack as CSK aim to navigate a challenging season affected by multiple injuries.
